ISTP: turn a successful exercise into genuine understanding

Completing an exercise successfully gives concrete feedback. To understand what you learned, explain your choices and recognize where the same method would not fit. Here is a way to connect practice with understanding.

Explain one decisive step

After the exercise, choose the step that directed the solution. Ask why it was appropriate and which information made it possible. You need not comment on every action. A short, precise justification can reveal more understanding than reproducing the entire learned procedure.

Compare a neighbouring problem

Try a similar exercise with one important condition changed. Identify what remains usable and what needs adapting. In psychology, situations may look alike while supporting different interpretations because of the method or available information. Compare your reasoning with the course rather than relying only on familiarity.

Build a decision guide

A study sheet can list questions to ask before selecting an approach: what data are available, what conclusion is requested and what limitations apply? It then guides analysis rather than merely storing steps. This is a format to test, not one shown to be particularly effective for all ISTPs.

Try it in practice

After a successful exercise, write a three-sentence justification and change one fact in the problem. Try again without the solution. If you reuse the procedure, explain why; if you change it, identify the condition that requires the adjustment.
