hesitate before saying yes. Sometimes you are looking for the words to explain what that choice would mean to you.

By Kyrian Hermansen · A function-based reading

Explore the functionsExplore my INFP book

The profileThe functionsDaily lifeCompareThe book

An offer can look appealing on paper and still leave you with a hesitation you cannot quite explain. You may not yet know whether it conflicts with a value, whether information is missing, or whether you simply need time. That internal work interests me when I talk about INFP. I want to examine how a view takes shape, how possibilities open, and what eventually makes a choice possible.

What does INFP mean?

INFP stands for Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving in the MBTI framework. Feeling refers here to a way of evaluating what matters; it does not measure how much emotion you experience. P does not mean you are incapable of organizing your life. In the function-based interpretation used here, we explore Fi, Ne, Si, and Te.

The sensitive dreamer portrait can feel reassuring while leaving many questions unanswered. Why does this particular decision bother you? What matters enough for you to decline? When does a new idea enrich the project, and when does it postpone the next step? You can enjoy imagining possibilities, keep commitments, and hold convictions that are difficult to explain. A useful profile leaves that complexity visible.

Fi · Ne · Si · Te

To understand INFP, look at the process

Two people can behave similarly for different reasons. That is why I put Jungian functions at the center of typing. I look at how someone takes in a situation and makes decisions, rather than inferring a type from a job, a flattering trait, or the state of a desk.

DominantFi
Introverted Feeling

Fi considers whether a decision fits your personal values. A practical solution can leave an uneasiness you cannot immediately explain. Naming what feels wrong can help you communicate a boundary. It doesn’t make other people’s needs less relevant.

AuxiliaryNe
Extraverted Intuition

Ne notices alternatives, makes connections, and asks what else could change. One detail can suggest a whole new approach. This flexibility helps you move beyond a habitual answer. It also needs a point where you choose an experiment instead of continually reopening the possibilities.

TertiarySi
Introverted Sensing

Si compares current experience with established reference points: what happened before, what has changed, and which conditions helped. Keeping a record of an attempt can support the next one. Previous experience gives you a comparison, without guaranteeing that this situation will be the same.

InferiorTe
Extraverted Thinking

Te attends to resources, visible criteria, and the organization of action. Who owns the next step? How will we know whether it works? It helps make an intention usable by other people. One limitation to watch for is treating what is easy to measure as everything that matters.

Dominant, auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior describe roles within this framework. “Inferior” does not mean absent, useless, or impossible to develop. Treat the order as a reference for reflection, not a ranking of your abilities.

A note from the author

Why I keep coming back to the functions

I’m Kyrian Hermansen. I’ve spent more than 200 hours studying this subject and have worked through personality typing with more than 200 people. That personal experience shapes how I explain the framework; it isn’t a scientific study.

I care about making Jungian functions understandable. They are often skimmed over, even though I believe they should guide the search for a type. Four letters are a starting point. I want you to have enough understanding to examine the result against your own experience.

Noé, Inès, and Malik: three fictional characters exploring choices, disagreements, and the work behind a neighborhood exhibition.

At work: what helps, and what can get in the way

You may notice when a project drifts away from its purpose or suggest an option nobody has considered. For that contribution to be heard, you sometimes need to make the reasoning visible: here is the criterion I care about, the options I considered, and the question where I need feedback. An initial version often helps more than extended reflection nobody can examine yet. Also ask what will count as finished; you can avoid investing all your effort in a requirement that exists only in your head.

In relationships: make your intention visible

You may hope someone close to you will understand why a situation affects you. When they do not, it can feel like a lack of attention. Yet they may not know what the moment means to you. “I’d like us to keep this evening for ourselves. Would that work for you?” opens a clearer exchange than a silent expectation. In return, ask what the other person wants to preserve when they defend a different solution. Understanding their reason does not require abandoning your own.

When pressure builds

When tasks pile up, you may become more abrupt, try to control every detail, or criticize yourself for not moving faster. Before treating this as evidence of type, examine the conditions: fatigue, unclear work, too many promises, or responsibility nobody has properly shared. Choose one thing to clarify or remove. If you need help, name the task and deadline; people will have more to respond to than a general “I’m overwhelmed.”

What if you’re considering several types?

With INFJ, examine what organizes the process: a personal evaluation that opens possibilities, or an overall understanding that encounters shared expectations. With ISFP, Fi remains dominant in this account, while auxiliary exploration involves Ne or Se.
